An MFA Thesis

on collecting, music curation, and the multi-faceted self.

In 2022 I received a hand-picked, 45 item collection of CDs, vinyl records, and cassette tapes. I just don’t know why they were chosen.

We are a collection of the ways that other people see us…

as much as we are how we see ourselves.

While I may not see myself in this heap of items, someone else does. That opinion is valid, cherished, and worth exploring.

A call to artists:

musicians, sound artists, poets, DJs, producers, writers, composers, enthusiasts.

The task is to examine your own collection, whether it’s a physical collection on a shelf or a digital one on a streaming site, and identify why you have what you do. Is there a CD that someone gave you one summer that you listened to on repeat? A genre you never liked but listened to because your best friend insisted? Explore these elements of your collection that were influenced by others, and create an audio file inspired by them.
